For the legs, we purchased black steel gas pipes which had to be measured and cut to size.  After the steel pipes were cut they had to be manually threaded with a pipe threader.  Gas fittings were used to connect the piping. This step resulted in a few choice bad words, it seems you can actually get them already threaded. But why should we take the easy route, when we can make ourselves crazy instead.

#00 Steel Wool and White Vinegar – Put a handful of steel wool in a jar and add white vinegar. Let the vinegar dilute the steel wool for at least a couple days. The mixture will get darker the longer you let it sit. Once diluted, simply paint the mixture on your piece. Oxidation will occur and the mixture reacts with the tannins in the wood to give it variations in color. It changed the Fir wood to dark blues, greys, browns, and black. Do not use white Pine because it will not darken much at all.
Per usual, I used pocket screws to fasten the table top together after applying glue to the edges.  Pic 3 shows the underside of the table.  A straight edge clamp and a circular saw were used to trim the ends of the top.  The blue masking tape helps limit splintering from the saw.  To see if the table was square, I compared the diagonal measurements across the table top.  Diagonal measurements on a square or rectangle should be equal if the piece is square on all corners.  It's not very critical on a rustic, distressed table since the table's charm comes from it's imperfections.
This table is a little narrower than I would have liked for it's length (34x72), but it's perfectly sized for the space we are using it in.  At 72" long, I would have preferred something closer to 40" wide but this works for us.  The top is made from 16" wide soffet boards from a house I helped tear down when I was 10 yrs old (no, it wasn't the house we were living in).  The old boards have been in the barn for 40 years and needed to be used.  The center painted board is also from the same house.  
Your earliest notes on woodworking will look much like notes from your first days at a new job: they're comprised of words you've heard, the lingo of a community and those in the know, that don't make any sense. Just as, at a new job, you will write a word like "Aditi?" and learn that it's a nickname that means "development server," so your first notes will be "biscuit joint?" and "joiner planer? planer joiner?"
When finishing (staining) softwoods, you will get better results by "conditioning" the wood before using the stain. Softwoods are like sponges - irregular sponges - and will have areas that totally suck up stain (like end-grain) and other areas that don't take it well at all. This leads to a "blotchy" finish instead of a nice overall color. Conditioning solutions can be purchased or home-made - I've had good results with both - and they are definitely worth the time and effort. Remember: Few people notice a perfect finish - only the imperfect finish stands out ;)

I am working on a range of traditional handmade oak furniture in kit form. At the moment I am limiting it to a ‘Joined’ or ‘Coffin’ stool together with a table version. Table aprons are the boards that make up the sides of the table base and connect the legs.  They are also called table skirts.  Dimensions are 3 1/2" wide and 22 1/4" long across the ends and 62" long down the sides.  For a 34x72 inch table and 4x4 legs, these apron lengths inset the legs roughly 2" on all sides.  The wood is 3/4" to 1" thick rough-cut wood from our old barn.  The red color was a little stark so I sparsely brushed a coat of chalk paint on and waxed again with Briwax.

This may be my longest post to date. But also the largest project, and I have to admit that the work itself was done by my husband and I was merely his helper.  We decided to build a farm table using reclaimed barn wood from scratch. Our first stop was to an awesome secret spot, secret because I’ve been forbidden from sharing its location, to pick out the wood. It’s really no secret, its located in New Jersey. Go ahead and google, it’s easy to find *wink* This place had a huge selection of slabs, doors, and everything wood.  Most of the wood comes from salvaged barns in Ohio! 
There's no better way to give thanks than to gather family and friends around an enormous table to share a feast. A farmhouse table would be the perfect spot. You could make one out of construction lumber and ordinary hardware in a couple of days. We're not talking precision woodworking here. If you can handle a circular saw and a chisel, you can do this. Farmers used to build these tables themselves, not furniture makers or carpenters, so it's okay if it turns out a bit rustic. That's half the fun. The other half is sitting down to eat at a table you built yourself.

I love this barnwood reclaimed table-your husband did a beautiful job! We have a coffee table and two end tables (hand-me-downs) that remind me a little of this table. They each have metal legs that have criss-cross metal bars that make shelves below, and are great for holding baskets. The tops of each were pretty rough when we inherited the tables, and lately I’ve been thinking about either sanding and then white-washing the wood, and now after seeing your pictures I’m thinking more about just sanding the tops and see how they look and maybe finishing them like you did your table!? (I think I like your idea better! How many coats of Varathane did you folks use?) Thank you so much for sharing!

From my point of view, I think this is really a different project because normally you will find only one wooden item like a chair, or a table, but in this project, you will find two wooden items. The combination of table and chair is really beneficial for me. I wanted to try something different project from my daily routine life and here in this image, you will find the full-size image of this project so you came to know that I am successful in making chair plus table project.

Wood screws often have a coarse pitch, unthreaded shank (the bit between the head and the tip), and flat heads. The coarse pitch helps the wood screw tap into the wood and make a solid connection. The unthreaded shank is used so that the head can go flush with the wood beneath it without the threads getting in the way. Flat heads are typically used so that the screw can sit flush against the wood. Most wood screws also require a pilot hole, which you should drill with a drill bit prior to screwing the screw into the wood, find a chart on what size hole to drill for what screw here.


The shop you see in the layout is my current setup and has evolved over many years to accommodate most importantly the acquisition of newer equipment but also better work flow. It is a free standing two story traditional barn style with office and storage space on the second level. Lumber and supplies are moved in and out of the shop through the front overhead door. To the left of the door are the lumber and plywood storage racks. Across from the lumber rack and to the right of the overhead door is the radial arm saw, miter saw and mortise utilizing a single fence system for all operations. Below and above these are cabinets and storage for misc. power hand tools.
To make the top, align the three pieces of 2 x 12. Fit them as tightly together as you can. Bore four pocket-screw holes through the bottom faces of the top pieces, then spread glue on each adjoining edge. With the pieces clamped together so that the ends are flush, fasten with 2½-inch pocket screws. Glue will squeeze out of the joint. Wait a few minutes for the glue to get rubbery, then shave it off with a sharp chisel. Keep the top flat as it dries—I like to clamp cauls across both ends to add stability. Cauls are 2 x 4s or other pieces of stout wood turned on their edges.

Spread wood glue on the joints, then nail them together with 8d finish nails. First nail through the sides into the back. Then nail through the top into the sides and back.
