The assembly and glue-up tips that we detail in this episode -- and our companion article -- can apply to the assembly of any woodworking project.

The first – and some say the most important choice in designing a dining table is size.  Since our tables are made-to-order we can offer a farmhouse table in any size, shape, style or color.  Do you need a 12 foot table, 72″ round pedestal table, a narrow 32″ wide trestle table, a 36″ high counter height table?  Large, long, narrow, small, square, round, oval tables.  All no problem.  We can make any of these and more.   Farmhouse tables are available as either new wood tables or old reclaimed wood.

In my project section I wrote an article about small boxes made with a router. The article was written years ago and the boxes were made several years before that. Thus, I had to use one of those old boxes to write this article as I couldn't exactly remember how I made them. The initial construction process came from that great Canadian TV show, The Router Workshop, but the jig I use was born of necessity. One year I decided to build a pile of these boxes and enter a craft fair. After two or three, I decided there had to be a faster way to set up for the cuts, so I used a discarded table saw sled to fashion the jig in this article.

In episode 10 of our series, Getting Started in Woodworking, we complete our first season with a demonstration on how to apply an oil-and-wax wood finish. This finishing recipe is extremely simple and very effective. It will work for about 95 percent of the projects most woodworkers build; the only exceptions are surfaces that need to take a lot of abuse, such as a dining table tabletop.

Not every woodworking shop have sawhorses, but you'll find them a useful and versatile item to have at hand. A sawhorse can be used as a short-term table, workbench or benchtop stand, and can be use as a workbench extender or to as a temporary lumber self. Build your own sawhorses allows you to customize them to your own needs and wood shop requirements.
The blade on a block plane, (click to enlarge drawing) commonly referred to as a plane iron, is mounted with the bevel side up to produce a cutting angle of about 37 degrees in a standard plane and 25 degrees in a low-angle plane. Some block planes feature an adjustable mouth, which allows the plane to be tuned for different cuts; Close the mouth and lower the blade for finish cuts or open the mouth and extend the blade for thicker rough cuts.

Block planes range in quality and price from hardware-store versions that cost around $35 to high-end brass planes that cost as much as $250. While the higher-priced models are likely to perform better out of the box and include higher-quality machining and parts, low-cost block planes can perform well if tuned up properly using the techniques detailed in this episode.

This saw has changed my life. I literally cannot even tell you who I am anymore. I have been reborn, and into a world where the lion lays with the sheep in euphoric happiness and cooperation. The skies are bluer now than ever before. My tastebuds have been supercharged; my skin feels tingly all through the day; my mind has been freed and I have new purpose and resolve.
Here is a look at the completed table prior to staining and sealing the piece. I also created matching benches to fit this table. The plans can be found by clicking here. I modified the width so they are a total of 69″ wide. Instead of using a 2×10 for the breadboards I use 2×8’s. Everything else was kept the same as Ana’s plans. The inside span of my table where the benches fit in is 73″ so that left 2 inches of wiggle room on each side of the bench so it can easily slide in and out.
Sand the table smooth. Start with 80-grit sandpaper, and move to a finer grit for each pass. You should end with 220-grit. I finished the table with two coats of Jacobean-tinted polyurethane, then buffed on a couple of coats of wax after it was dry. The dark tint hides any scratches or nicks and also makes it look like it was built a century ago. On that note, you can give up your coasters—a little wear will only make your table look better.
Farm tables are those warm, rustic surfaces that draw inspiration from the original harvest tables found in American homes of the 18th and 19th centuries. Rather than being built by skilled and trained artisans, farm tables were assembled from large and rough planks of fir. Their construction valued sturdiness and utility over detail and refinery. Today, farm tables can bring a sense of antique charm to any home, complementing matched chairs and contemporary benches alike. Here are five DIY farmhouse table projects to inspire your next act of handyman prowess.
If you are in need of a big farmhouse table, select this plan to build your own. Though not a traditional farmhouse table, it is beautiful in the outdoor living area making it ideal for guests. Also, as the table is big enough to suit any size of family, it makes it perfect for large families or when quite a few guests join you for lunch or dinner.
If your space is very limited in your living or kitchen, you will love this farmhouse table design which can also be used as a kitchen island. This feature makes it perfect for keeping it in the kitchen space. If you have some woodworking skills, consider making pocket holes without adding 2×2 supports as in the original plan which saves both money and time. In this process, you will not have to drill or cut more holes, and all the screw holes can be hidden providing a better finish.

You pass Jeff Miller's shop window every day on your walk to the Metra train. You look at the website with the class listing every day. I know money is tight right now, that you're making about $34,000/year before taxes, that graduate school costs half of that, and that you need to cover all of your living expenses. But that table making class will be worth it, and will introduce you to endless happy hours of woodworking and some of the most talented and generous people you'll ever meet. You don't have any credit card debt, but having a few hundred dollars of it won't kill you. Trust me: in 2010 I don't remember what it cost, only that I made that beautiful cherry Shaker-style end table and learned enough to make more furniture afterward; that I was hooked; and that having things to do by hand after being in an office job all day will save your soul. Trust me. For all the books, videos, websites and other resources online, you'll make the biggest leaps and bounds in woodworking when you take a class with a true expert with decades of experience who can observe and help you correct and hone YOUR mistakes and form.
This farmhouse table is one of the sturdiest tables that you can make. It can fit in smaller spaces but has ample space for seating four people. You can also fit in six people if you want. The benches provide that extra space and also they look great. The plans are very easy to execute. Solid oak wood is recommended for the top and turned wood legs provide a great look which you can build in about $250.
There are also project books that provide fun new ideas to play with on the scrollsaw, and the fun is made even better when you’re being productive by making gifts at the same time. If you’re a carver, there are many project ideas available to you, as well. There are also Christmas projects for the woodturner. One popular idea is to make ornaments for your tree—or someone else’s. There are several books that will provide help specifically for making ornaments. You can find a variety of kits available, and then you can use whatever material you prefer to turn and then shape and finish any ornament you can imagine!

Whatever type of sander you use, you’ll be using sandpaper. Most sandpaper is aluminum-oxide and comes in different grits. The grit is a measure how fine it is and will determine what you’re using it for. Grits typically range from about 20 to 1000, 20 being extremely course and 1000 being extremely fine. When sanding, if you have a lot of material to remove and really need to smooth things out, a low or course grit will be best. Once you’ve sanded with the coarse grit move to a finer grit, typically up around 200 for finishing.

Bandsaws are very handy. They cut cleaner than jigsaws, but perhaps one of the biggest advantages of a bandsaw is convenience. It's my tool of choice for making most quick rough cuts. I also use it for cutting up long scraps to short pieces to fit them in the scrap box. I actually bought my bandsaw before I bought a table saw - I saw one marked down at a woodworking show, and I knew I'd get one eventually, so I jumped on it. That was before I built a bandsaw
Drill four 5/8-in.-dia. 1/2-in.-deep holes on the large disc?inside the traced circle?then use 5/8-in. dowel centers to transfer the hole locations to the underside of the small disc. Drill four 1/2-in.-deep holes on the underside of the small disc and a 1/2-in.-deep hole in the center of the top for the dowel handle. Glue in the dowels to join the discs, and glue in the handle. We drilled a wood ball for a handle knob, but a screw-on ceramic knob also provides a comfortable, attractive grip.

You will delay plans to visit both of them, and they will die within a few months of one another and you will never get the chance to meet them in person. Go, go, go. Meet these rare gems of woodworkers while you can - and view all of your elder woodworkers this way. People don't live forever. This also applies to your grandparents.
