Wood screws often have a coarse pitch, unthreaded shank (the bit between the head and the tip), and flat heads. The coarse pitch helps the wood screw tap into the wood and make a solid connection. The unthreaded shank is used so that the head can go flush with the wood beneath it without the threads getting in the way. Flat heads are typically used so that the screw can sit flush against the wood. Most wood screws also require a pilot hole, which you should drill with a drill bit prior to screwing the screw into the wood, find a chart on what size hole to drill for what screw here.

Living in South Florida gives me the ability to work under the bright Florida sun by simply rolling the woodworking power tools out from under the roof. On days like the one when this photo was taken, when rain is expected later in the afternoon, most of the tools can be kept under the roof, and rolled away into large lockable storage rooms in less than five minutes.

There's no better way to give thanks than to gather family and friends around an enormous table to share a feast. A farmhouse table would be the perfect spot. You could make one out of construction lumber and ordinary hardware in a couple of days. We're not talking precision woodworking here. If you can handle a circular saw and a chisel, you can do this. Farmers used to build these tables themselves, not furniture makers or carpenters, so it's okay if it turns out a bit rustic. That's half the fun. The other half is sitting down to eat at a table you built yourself.

This cute earring box is the ideal one for giving the gifts to your loved ones. Have you ever given your gift in a wooden jewelry box? This basic table from Instructables is also very easy to build, and also the benches are simple in design. If you are looking to make a simple table with many seating, you can consider making this table. However, the chairs would require some good carpentry skills or you can buy them separately. It is recommended to use kiln dried lumber which can be readily available at your home store. Check for the initials KD or HT to know the type of lumber to be used.
For the legs, we purchased black steel gas pipes which had to be measured and cut to size.  After the steel pipes were cut they had to be manually threaded with a pipe threader.  Gas fittings were used to connect the piping. This step resulted in a few choice bad words, it seems you can actually get them already threaded. But why should we take the easy route, when we can make ourselves crazy instead.

Initially I thought a wine rack would be a finicky project to create, with the necessity of holding the bottles at a certain angle, etc. However, this ended up being a quick, easy and fun build. The shape of the bottles lets them rest on the rack at the correct angle (which is really only important when you are going to let your wine age). The simplicity of the design also allows you to see the labels on the bottles.

This table is a little narrower than I would have liked for it's length (34x72), but it's perfectly sized for the space we are using it in.  At 72" long, I would have preferred something closer to 40" wide but this works for us.  The top is made from 16" wide soffet boards from a house I helped tear down when I was 10 yrs old (no, it wasn't the house we were living in).  The old boards have been in the barn for 40 years and needed to be used.  The center painted board is also from the same house.
To finish the table, I first sanded then added a little bit of distressing. Okay… A LOT of distressing. This step was probably the boys’ favorite, because I handed them each a large rock and let them go to town banging the heck out of the table. I wanted the table to look like it’s been around for generations, and all the little nicks and dings add SO much character to the wood.

Hybrid saws are essentially built like the old contractor saws, but with the motor in the cabinet, just like a cabinetmaker saw. They are much cheaper than cabinetmakers saws and not as heavy. The saw at left is my first table saw, a 40-year old contractor saw, which I enclosed on the bottom to keep the sawdust inside. At present, I use a hybrid table saw

Another classic game! (Are you picking up on a trend?). A cribbage board is really just a piece of wood with 240-plus holes drilled in it. This project includes files necessary to program a CNC machine to drill all the holes, but it also includes a template for boring the holes with a drill. There are endless opportunities for customizing this project with different species of wood. All this adds up to the fact that cribbage boards make great gifts.
I know you hate to ask for anything, but when it comes to woodworking it will bear you in good stead. You know that, when it comes to computers and carpentry, your grandfather has probably already done it. Call him and ask. Fortunately, there are also a lot of (and will be more) people online who are older than 30, many of whom are retired and lucky enough to be able to spend a lot of time online in woodworking forums answering questions instead of boring day-job office applications. They are helpful, generous and kind. You should approach them earlier and often. One of them will also point you to a veritable treasure trove of saws, and a master saw restorer and seller.

If you want to get into woodworking, a good project to tackle is building your own workbench. It's really not that hard. So if building your own workbench is a bit too much work, or too intimidating, then take a step back and examine whether you really want to get into woodworking. This may be different if your goal is to cut silhouettes of kittens out of plywood with a scrollsaw, but I wouldn't call that sort of activity "woodworking".

I have been involved one way or another with woodworking for the last six decades, it began when I was about ten years old, my father built me a jigsaw by modifying an old Briggs and Stratton engine. Looking back I don't believe it cost him anything more than the price of a few welding rods to give me hours of entertainment cutting doodads out of apple box wood. The last three have been limited due to health reasons but I still do small projects when necessary.

Never consider using wood from a high volume store such as Lowes or Home Depot for furniture. You will almost assuredly have serious warpage as this wood is never dried to the proper level prior to being placed in the stores for sale. I normally shoot for 7%-8% moisture content. Anything greater than that will have a tendency to warp as it continues to dry out. You need to go to a lumber yard where the boards are actually dried prior to sale. You can acquire an inexpensive meter and check the boards yourself prior to purchase. Actually, I prefer air dried lumber as opposed to kiln dried. I have let it dry for 1-2 years or more prior to using it. I don't run it through the planer until I am ready to use it. Hope this is helpful. By the way, Red Oak or Cherry makes beautiful furniture. I seldom use white oak because the stuff is really tough to work with due to its hardness. Make beautiful furniture, though!
If you’re looking to show off you’re woodworking skills and you have a piece of wood with a beautiful linear grain pattern, then this box project is a great choice. It’s a more refined box design, and as you might expect, it’s a little more challenging to build than the simple keepsake box presented earlier on this gift list. The sides are constructed so that the wood grain flows smoothly across one face, around the corner and into the adjoining face — and all the way around the box without a break — the grain itself becomes a major part of the design. The design is also enhanced by tapering the box sides, allowing the eye to more easily take in the continuous run of grain at the corners.

This part is optional, but I like the little detail it adds.  I used a table saw to cut a line down the trimmed down 2×6.  I cut it about 1″ from the bottom.  I adjusted my table saw blade about 1/4″ high and ran it through, then adjusted slightly and ran it through again so that the groove was cut about 2 blade widths thick (slightly under 1/4″).  You could do this with a router instead if you wanted.
With a pencil and a protractor, divide the larger disc into 30-degree wedges to create 12 center lines for the bottle indents. Center and trace the smaller disc on top of the larger disc. Next, with a drill press, drill 3/8-in.-deep holes on the 12 center lines with the 1-7/8-in. Forstner bit, spacing them between the disc’s outer edge and the traced circle. Next, divide the smaller disc into 60-degree wedges and drill six more 3/8-in.-deep holes with the Forstner bit.

This tutorial shows the making of stylish wooden wall hangings which is one of the easiest ways by using basic tools like wood cutters, hammer, drill and measuring tape. While the best look of modern homestead table has been around for a short time, another harvest of farmhouse style feasting tables has been showing up of late. They are an incredible approach to join and investigate a generally present day room. The long pieces of crude wood are emotional without being overwhelming. Many combine press with recovered wood for a modern curve that is tough without being to massive.
If you don’t have a large space for dining, you can check this plan. This design from Instructables is very basic to make and can easily fit in your small space. However, it has the capacity for six people to sit together at the table. The cost depends on the type of lumber you are using; construction grade pine wood might cost around $50, and if you are using furniture grade lumber, it might cost approximately $120.

A good friend celebrated a milestone birthday this year, and since he’s a real wine afficionado, I wanted to give him a few very nice bottles of wine presented in a special way. I’ve seen expensive vintage wines sold in wooden presentation boxes, but I wanted to make something that’s well beyond the ordinary. So I designed a box that presents the wine bottles by “popping them up” as the lid is opened.
Greet your guests with a happy group of snowmen made from a 4”x4” fence post. Just paint them, and then accessorize with socks for hats and flannel for scarves, like this snowman family by A Mommy's Life With a Touch of Yellow. They’ll look great for the entire winter season on an entryway table, a mantel, or a front stoop, even after the snow melts.

This is another very simple and traditional farmhouse table which is extremely strong and durable with no wobbling. Also, from the very look of the table, you can understand that this project will be very to make. This plan has been inspired by Ana White’s DIY plan and modified by DIYPete making the design a unique one. The two benches make the table look simpler and also provide ample seating capacity.

While you can purchase pre-surfaced lumber at your local home center, there are several benefits to buying rough-sawn lumber from a hardwood dealer and milling it to size in your shop. Rough-sawn lumber is typically less expensive than pre-surfaced lumber. And rough-sawn lumber can be milled to custom thickness giving you more flexibility with your woodworking designs. Check out this video for a detailed explanation on how lumber is cut and sold, including how to speak like a pro at the lumberyard and how to calculate a board foot.
In the grand scheme of history, power woodworking tools are a very recent innovation. However, it is hard to imagine modern woodworking without the use of power tools. That being said, one doesn't need a shop full of expensive woodworking machines to be an effective woodworker. When building a workshop, there are seven power tools to focus on first:
The router might just be the most versatile woodworking power tool there is and it's a great first tool for beginner woodworkers. When set up properly and safely handled, a router can do everything from cutting joinery to shaping parts. Just be sure you understand the basic safety procedures and read the tool's manual if you're new to using a router.

Doing fine. I don't expect the pocket screws to fail or loosen over a typical period of time. They make a very solid joint especially if you also glue the joint. Compared to mortise and tenon a pocket screw will fail sooner under severe stress, however they are easier to repair than M&T which blow out. So I expect long use from this table unless a bunch of heavy people start dancing on it and the old wood will probably break first.

Methods for skinning a cat have nothing on ways to build a bench. Explore different joinery methods and work with those that you are able to complete the best. Don't overcomplicate something when it doesn't need to be. There's a reason tools have improved, glue has gotten better, fasteners stronger, and new joinery methods have been introduced. A lot of the time the focus in woodworking is on finding shortcuts to get the same or better results. Don't let joinery snobs influence you.
Have you ever seen a knife made of wood? It is only for decoration purpose, but it can be a great gift. I hope you would like this. Build your own furniture, a dream of many but a reality for few. In this video I show you how I make farm tables. This is one made for a customer for a new house. It's 10 feet long and made from red oak, sawn from a dead standing tree. The base is made from spruce and yellow pine. It is constructed with mortise and tenon joints, using a hollow chisel mortiser and a tenon jig I made for the table saw.
