Hey, I want to build all of these (and I did read to the end), but my list of projects is so long that any one of these will have to wait ’til next year (and i don’t mean January). thanks for all these ideas. there is one more i read about in the Handy Family Man. It is an adaptation to your shop vac that puts the hose at your project so it sucks up the dust as it is produced. Wonderful, right? Maybe next year!
There are different grades of tools available at different prices. Salesmen will probably tell you to get good quality tools that last a lifetime. But the price difference between a cheap tool and a good quality tool can easily be a factor of four. My advice is to get cheap tools first and use them until they break. Once they break, it's time to consider getting something better. But unless you are a professional who uses the tools every day, even a cheap tool is likely to last a long time.
If you are looking for a simple design for making your farmhouse table where you can have additional space to make more people sit, this plan could be ideal for you. You're going to connect the two leg–apron assemblies to the stretchers using cross lap joints. These are among the easiest and most forgiving of wood joints to make, and they're also quite sturdy. Mark the joint positions on the legs and stretchers. Start the half-lap joints on the legs by notching the two outside lines with a circular saw set to a depth of 1½ inches. Guide the saw using a triangular rafter square. Between the two outside cuts make a series of relief cuts spaced ⅛ inch apart (fig. 3). Then use a sharp chisel to chop away the waste (fig. 4). When you cut the half-lap joints on the short stretcher, set the saw's depth to 1⅜ inches deep. This will make the stretcher extend ⅝ inch past the surface of the leg when the table is finally assembled. The offset will give you a table that looks like it was built by a farmer rather than by West Elm. It'll look nice.
This woodshop photo is the outdoor Florida woodshop of Woodworking Guide Chris Baylor. This woodshop photo shows a portable miter saw stand, temporary shop table consisting of a pair of sawhorses with plywood as a table top, a contractor table saw and band saw on portable bases, and an Adirondack loveseat glider rocker that is a current woodworking project in progress.
The cost of being disorganized is time. It takes me ten times as long to work on a project when I am scouring the room looking for a drill bit, the right screws, or trying to remember where I last used one of my 10 tape measures. Workshop organization is an ongoing project. As you acquire more tools, you have to rearrange your shop to work in storage for those new items. So mobile and modular storage, wherever possible will save you time down the road. Here are some amazing Workshop Organization Ideas that I hope will inspire you!
I used a #00 Steel Wool and White Vinegar solution to patina the wood and give it an aged look. Put a good handful of steel wool in a jar and add white vinegar. Let the vinegar dilute the steel wool for at least 3 to 4 days. The mixture will get darker the longer you let it sit. I let mine sit for a full week. Once diluted, simply brush the mixture on your piece. Oxidation will occur as the mixture reacts with the tannins in the wood to give it variations in color. It changed the Fir wood to dark blues, greys, browns, and black. Do not use white Pine because it will not darken much at all. If you'd rather use a stain, Minwax has some great choices to choose from. A couple of my favorites are Special Walnut, Dark Walnut, Provincial, Weathered Grey, and Golden Oak.
Woodworking is based on a small number of core skills that when combined in various groupings make it possible for us to build a huge range of projects. Unfortunately, too many new woodworkers do not take the time to learn the core skills, opting to jump ahead of themselves to projects that seem more appealing at the moment. Very often, acquired bad habits and frustration are just around the corner.
For the legs, we purchased black steel gas pipes which had to be measured and cut to size.  After the steel pipes were cut they had to be manually threaded with a pipe threader.  Gas fittings were used to connect the piping. This step resulted in a few choice bad words, it seems you can actually get them already threaded. But why should we take the easy route, when we can make ourselves crazy instead.

Although refrigerators long ago rendered them obsolete, antique oak ice boxes remain popular with collectors, even though they’re expensive and hard to find. This do-it-yourself version is neither: it’s both inexpensive and easy to build. An authentic reproduction of an original, the project is especially popular when used as a bar, but it has many

Our recommended tool kit includes: a sturdy workbench with a woodworking vise to hold workpieces steady when cutting or shaping parts. Marking and measuring tools for laying out and cutting parts. A circular saw or tablesaw for making rip cuts (straight cuts with the grain) and cross cuts (straight cuts against the grain). A router for shaping edges and profiles and cutting joinery. A block plane to shape parts by hand or smooth rough surfaces. A jig saw or bandsaw for making curved or irregular cuts. A palm sander to smooth surfaces for finishing. And a collection of clamps to assemble your projects or hold pieces on your workbench
The table top was then sealed with multiple coats of Varathane for protection.   We chose not to add a stain to the top because its natural coloring is gorgeous already.  There are shades of browns and grays in the wood along with saw marks from the original milling, knots, and grooves that you would come to expect from a reclaimed barn wood table.
A good friend celebrated a milestone birthday this year, and since he’s a real wine afficionado, I wanted to give him a few very nice bottles of wine presented in a special way. I’ve seen expensive vintage wines sold in wooden presentation boxes, but I wanted to make something that’s well beyond the ordinary. So I designed a box that presents the wine bottles by “popping them up” as the lid is opened.
You have no money, so you have dull IKEA knives in your kitchen right now that you don't even realize are dull, but you're going to learn that dull knives and tools can be more dangerous than sharp ones. You start changing your form to try to make them work better, when they really just need sharpening. Sign up for that sharpening class you're thinking of taking, stop being afraid to take tools apart to sharpen them thinking you won't be able to put them back together (especially the Lie Nielsen ones, but maybe just don't start with those), and do it. Learning how to properly remove rust and sharpen tools will be one of the skills you'll be most thankful for as time goes on, and it will also enable you to buy some inexpensive used tools at garage sales and make them sing. Speaking of sharpening...

Finally, a word on glues: You might want to do some experimenting with polyurethane glue instead of aliphatic resin (wood) glue. Polyurethane glues require a slightly different work flow, but since switching to polyurethane about 15 years ago, I can't see going back. I use aliphatic glues for some things (like biscuit joints) - but not very often. Polyurethane glues actually harden (aliphatic resins remain "liquid"), poly takes stain like wood (no bright areas where the stain wouldn't bond to the glue lines), poly doesn't dull tools or gum up sandpaper, poly is waterproof and can fill minor gaps. My favorite brand, so far, is Gorilla Glue.

Because these legs were salvaged they had old screw holes in them which were filled prior to painting.  In retrospect, it probably would have looked cool to just leave them.  I lightly sanded the legs with 100 & 150 grit sandpaper which smoothed them without removing all the saw marks.  One coat of chalk paint and 2 coats of clear Briwax was used to finish the legs.  Briwax yellows the finish a bit which aged the paint nicely.  Between coats of Briwax I sanded through the paint on some of the edges with 100 grit paper to show wear.
Never consider using wood from a high volume store such as Lowes or Home Depot for furniture. You will almost assuredly have serious warpage as this wood is never dried to the proper level prior to being placed in the stores for sale. I normally shoot for 7%-8% moisture content. Anything greater than that will have a tendency to warp as it continues to dry out. You need to go to a lumber yard where the boards are actually dried prior to sale. You can acquire an inexpensive meter and check the boards yourself prior to purchase. Actually, I prefer air dried lumber as opposed to kiln dried. I have let it dry for 1-2 years or more prior to using it. I don't run it through the planer until I am ready to use it. Hope this is helpful. By the way, Red Oak or Cherry makes beautiful furniture. I seldom use white oak because the stuff is really tough to work with due to its hardness. Make beautiful furniture, though!
A luminaria (often called luminary) is a traditional Mexican lantern made from a paper bag with sand and a candle inside. We’ve add some woodworking panache to these outdoor accents and build our luminarias from wood, with box joints and a star-shaped cutout. They’re beautiful — and reusable — ways to brighten patios, steps and walkways this holiday season.
In my project section I wrote an article about small boxes made with a router. The article was written years ago and the boxes were made several years before that. Thus, I had to use one of those old boxes to write this article as I couldn't exactly remember how I made them. The initial construction process came from that great Canadian TV show, The Router Workshop, but the jig I use was born of necessity. One year I decided to build a pile of these boxes and enter a craft fair. After two or three, I decided there had to be a faster way to set up for the cuts, so I used a discarded table saw sled to fashion the jig in this article.

After cutting the rabbet joints, we walk you through the glue-up and assembly of the box. This critical stage in the process involves applying glue to the box parts and using clamps to hold the parts together while the glue dries. The assembly and glue-up tips that we detail in this episode -- and our companion article -- can apply to the assembly of any woodworking project.

There’s a lot of space above the shelf in most closets. Even though it’s a little hard to reach, it’s a great place to store seldom-used items. Make use of this wasted space by adding a second shelf above the existing one. Buy enough closet shelving material to match the length of the existing shelf plus enough for two end supports and middle supports over each bracket. Twelve-inch-wide shelving is available in various lengths and finishes at home centers and lumberyards.
